Cassie's Story

Cassie sat back in her chair and looked up at the clock on the office wall. It was 7:30 p.m., where had the time gone? The rest of the staff left at 5:00 p.m. but Cassie wanted to stay a few minutes to finish up a report for tomorrow's meeting. "Well," she mumbled to the empty room "that's as good as it's going to get, besides my stomach is growling."

She tucked the pages neatly into her briefcase and got up to get her jacket. Walking across the room, Cassie looked down at the street from her fifth floor office in the Park Plaza Professional Building. The skyline was dimming and some of the street lamps were already beginning to flicker on.

She could see Alfredo's neon sign down the block and decided she would just pop in and get some pasta to take home for dinner. As she headed for the door, she heard the sound of the elevator door closing. "Guess I'm not the only one working late", she thought as she stepped out into the empty hallway. The emptiness seemed so odd.

Hearing the elevator door close, she felt certain she would run into someone. She thought maybe they had been going down instead, but as she reached to push the button she noticed it was in the up position not the down one.

Just then she heard a scratching sound just around the corner. "Who's there?" she called out. No answer. "Is that you, Ed?" Ed was the building custodian.

Still no answer. There is was again... scratch, scratch, scratch. Heart racing, Cassie pushed the elevator button. Why was it taking so long... she pushed it again. The scratching sound seemed to be getting louder and closer. She closed her eyes in terror. Then she felt a scratch on her arm and felt a hot breath on her face.

She opened her eyes to scream and found herself face to face with Duke, her German Shepherd. Apparently, she had overslept and he was in desperate need to go out.

Note: Dreams are not always literal, sometimes they are in response to some event or stimulus outside of the dream. Often what seems like a long dream was actually only a few seconds in duration after a certain stimulus.
