Beth's Dream
Beth was spending the day with her grandson, Joey. They first went to a toy store where Joey got to spend a gift certificate that he had received for his birthday. After much deliberation, he decided to purchase a Star Wars Action figure.
Before heading home, Beth decided they would stop at the local Farmer’s Market to pick up some fresh produce for dinner. While Beth was picking out some nice juicy, red tomatoes, Joey, totally absorbed in his new toy wandered off. Beth, turned to ask Joey if he would like to help her pick out a big, green watermelon for after dinner, but he was no where in sight. Panicked, Beth wandered up and down past many vendors calling Joey’s name. He wasn’t answering. She saw a Policeman on the street corner and enlisted his help.
Beth, was sitting on the street corner crying when an apparition of Joey appeared. He was wearing a bright red sweater. He said, “Don’t cry, Grandmother, I’m gone, but you can find the new me.” Beth suddenly woke up. She was perspiring and her heart was racing. She wanted to go back to sleep to try and get Joey back or better understand the dream. Too, late she was wide awake now. All day Beth worried that this was some kind of a bad omen and that something bad was going to happen to her youngest grandson.
Many people dream of losing a loved one and fear that it might be prophetic. Dreams are usually more complex than that and need to be broken down bit by bit. Because you are the creator of the dream, you are all of the characters. In this dream, Beth, who had become a bit reclusive, had three colorful emphasis; Red tomato, Green Watermelon, Red sweater on Joey. Three other stand outs are Star Wars Action Figure, Policeman and Farmer’s Market.
With some contemplation, Beth was able to see that this dream was more about her fear of losing her own youth. The Toy Action figure was telling her that she needed to have more fun, take some action in her life. The Farmer’s Market is a good thing. It represents freshness, good heath, productivity.
This is further seen with the Tomato and Watermelon. Even though there was no physical reason for her reclusiveness, the fact that she dreamed these things in vivid Red and Green are the hesitancy she feels about making changes in her life. Should I go a different way? Should I stop old habits?
Joey was the youngest and probably the last of Beth’s grandchildren. He would be her last symbol of youth. The Red sweater on Joey was possibly her subconscious telling her to stop obsessing over that which is gone. Even the words told her to not cry over her lost youth because there is something new out there for her. The Policeman, an authority figure, led Beth to understand that she could become more authoritative in decisions regarding herself and any healthy, positive changes she could make in her life. In stead of mourning a loss, this dream came to Beth as a blessing.
